SNATCHED from
notagoddess so I have SOMETHING TO DO HHHHHHHHHHH
1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?Iceskating! Having once been a rollerblader, it didn't take long to get the hang of so there were no casualties.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?Oh boy, I don't do New Year's resolutions. Fresh starts are awesome, but if I can't keep to something I say I'll do at any other point of the year, New Year's is no different x_x
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Not exactly close, but I think a family member or two have
4. Did anyone close to you die?Nopers
5. What countries did you visit?Japan, South Korea
6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?More Japanese practice. I was in Japan for five months but didn't put my own Japanese to use-- mainly because when I did have time and wasn't working, I just lacked the motivation to really do anything.
7. What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?July 16th, when I arrived in Japan via KIX, walked by the Pokemon store, and listened to my friend rant about how Pokemon Go wasn't out in Japan yet lol
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?Just!!! Being in Japan, teaching, and growing a bit out of my shell. As an extreme introvert, all I wanted was to become at least a little less shy in front of strangers, and I succeeded! I even figured out how to deal with preschool-aged kids-- though, I can't say I can deal with the same-aged kids in America the same way I do in Japan. orz
9. What was your biggest failure?Going out and meeting people when I could have, back in Japan. I was always working, so I was always tired. Or when I wasn't working as much, during the summer, it was too hot to even go outside so I just didn't. I came up with every excuse I could to not go out or study and yeah, that's one thing I messed up on.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Not an illness, but I did get major allergies for the first time in my life when I was in Japan. I honestly thought I had a bad cold, but after research, NOPE, it was allergies.
11. What was the best thing you bought? So, a pair of headphones from Tower Records at Tokyo Station. I really, really love headphones and always prefer to own a pair that are even more stylish than I am.
You'd think I'd have bought more when I was there, but I was honestly only making enough to survive at the time.
(edit after ten minutes of writing this bit: I did also buy a few doujinshi because I'm a shameless doujinshi collector, so there's that)
(edit after ten more minutes of writing this bit because I realize I did not spend the entire year in Japan: so before Japan, my sister and I invested in a PS3 and we bought both KH 1.5 & 2.5, so those were pretty amazing and wonderful and everything to me)
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? My friend who helped bring me to Japan in the first place! We've known each other online for about 14 years now and had met only one other time before (in Tokyo 2014), and he was always the brother I never had. While a majority of our time spent together was him making fun of me (teasingly, ofc), he really did help me feel better and a lot less alone by offering an ear when I needed it, and I really appreciated that much at least.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?Oh boy, I can't talk about it here.
14. Where did most of your money go?Travel expenses.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?I gues really, really excited about spending my birthday and Christmas and New Year's in Japan with my friends!!! And maybe try that Christmas meal special from KFC!!!
But that didn't happen.
16. What song will always remind you of 2016?PPAP.
I hate that song.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier?Honestly, yeah. In a way? I feel like now, after spending so much of my life with just a "Japan" goal (followed by a "well, now what" when I got there), I have a much clearer head and am now finally coming up with new goals. New goals involving new places, and I feel a little more free, to be honest!
ii. thinner or fatter? My mom says I got thinner but she says that every time she sees me, also I gained weight while in Japan because I was eating a lot of sweets-- but I was also walking EVERYWHERE, so I honestly ???? Maybe I'm just the same ??? My diet has also been all over the place since I got back, so my body is pretty confused right now.
iii. richer or poorer?Poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?Japanese practice. Also drawing! I did not draw enough.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?Making excuses on why I couldn't study orz
20. How did you spend Christmas?I spent it with my best friend's family and played FFXV :333333333333333333333333333
21. Did you fall in love in 2016?I did!! With Kyoto.
And also Tokyo. Again. Because I love Tokyo so much. It's everything to me.
22. How many one-night stands? Not at all a one-night stand in the way the question is implying, but I spent a night in Seoul and then came back the next day because I had work. That's it. I arrived, ate food, looked around, slept, came back the next morning.
23. What was your favorite TV program?I watched and mostly re-watched quite a few throughout the year, so those would be BBC Merlin, Voltron, and Haikyuu!!
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?Nahhh
25. What was the best book you read?I didn't read any books but I did read a bit of fanfiction omg there were some really good ones, I may or may not rec them at some point one day
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?Discovering that the type of music I've been searching for for so many years is called chillstep. Also, Wagakki Band.
27. What did you want and get?To... move to Japan.
28. What did you want and not get?To... stay in Japan.
29. What was your favorite film of this year?Moana!!
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?It was a few days after I came back from Japan-- so I visited my dad, then went to my best friend's family's house for the weekend. I got to play FFXV finally ;v; I turned 25 HHHHHHH
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? The thing I've been yelling at myself about for not doing in Japan (studying)
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?Childish. Compared to everyone else in Japan?
It's funny because here, I wear the same thing and I easily blend in, but over there, I stood out a lot more (because I have no other clothes in my wardrobe I could blend in with) and I looked like an actual child. Somehow.
33. What kept you sane?Roosterteeth videos, Rosanna Pansino videos, any sort of video I watched in the US that continued to remind me of home while I holed myself up in a room whenever I wasn't working.
After properly making my apartment in Japan a little more homey, I didn't need those videos as much and I gradually got better.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?Taka from ONE OK ROCK. Oh boy, did I develop the biggest crush on him earlier in the year. I was originally planning on going to a concert in Osaka next month......
35. What political issue stirred you the most?I'm not gonna talk about it, but let me say that all of my Japanese coworkers and even all my students were asking me questions about everything.
36. Who did you miss?My home in Wyoming. I was so homesick the first couple months, it was difficult to get out of bed every morning with nothing in the day to look forward to. "But you were in Japan! You achieved your dream, even for a little while!" Because everything just gets better right as you get to where you want to be-- even I wasn't naive enough to believe that.
37. Who was/were the best new person(s) you met?A few of my students and also some new friends I made!!! I will be VERY VAGUE.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016?
Children will know when you are being fake.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
So everybody ever be buddies
Days we grew up are days we will treasure
Show everybody show is beginning
Curtain has risen, make your own storyline
Dream as if you will live forever
And live as if you'll die today
